Beyond X-Rays: Potential of Non-Ionizing Imaging
Presenter: Lorenzo Costa, PhD, Netherlands
Accurate and safe imaging is pivotal for managing adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis. While conventional X-rays and CT scans provide valuable information, their reliance on ionizing radiation poses significant risks, mainly for adolescents, as their body undergoes important physiological changes, making this life stage particularly vulnerable to radiations. This presentation will explore novel imaging techniques that offer potential advantages for scoliosis management. We will delve into the strengths and limitations of conventional imaging, emphasizing the importance of minimizing radiation exposure. Subsequently, we will introduce ultrasound-based Scolioscan and MRI-derived synthetic CT (sCT) as promising alternatives. Scolioscan offers non-invasive assessment of coronal and sagittal spinal curvature, while sCT provides detailed 3D visualization without radiation exposure.
