From Schroth-Cheneau to Lyon Method-ARTBrace: Practicing PSSE with Coupled Movements Detorsion
The 100 years old Schroth method is the best known internationally and has made remarkable progress in the non-surgical orthopedic treatment of scoliosis and juvenile kyphosis. It may seem sufficient to many physiotherapists; however, its results have not been sufficient to convince many surgeons. There are many reasons for this:
The Schroth method was originally designed to avoid braces and is based on mechanical correction of the deformity. Today, it incorporates polyethylene braces that are more or less based on the same curvature classification. From the beginning, 200 years ago, the Lyon method combined postural exercises and mechanical correction devices. The basis of the exercises of the Lyon method is indeed the stimulation of the postural system. This stimulation of the postural system is carried out according to the stage of maturation and by stimulating the four tracts of the extra-extrapyramidal system in static and dynamic. Currently, numerous publications and experiments have confirmed the delayed maturation of the postural system in idiopathic scoliosis.
